Reflection

As I reflect on this assignment, I realize how much I did not know. It has been an awesome leaning experience. I hope to be able to visit many of these areas again. I can say that I am much more aware of the different uses of the new equipment that we are getting in our schools and classrooms. It has brought me up to another level for understanding technology and it's uses in the classrooms. I can certainly understand why children love technology. Time seems to be the only problem I see, and therefore it will need to be incorporated with lessons that are normally taught in our curriculm.
As I reflect on the different tools, I found that Wordle, Create a flickr and Brainpop for ESL students will be a few that I will revisit for using with my students. I am sure there will be more as I start to plan my year.

Tool 11

Tool 11 Digital Citizenship
This tool covered the importance of teaching the different safety practices for using the internent and all of its possibilities. What I get from this is, don't expect the students to know what is appropriate and not appropriate when using the internet. They too are things that must be taught and brought to the attention of the user. They need to know that what they read and what they write should be appropriate for the area in which they are exploring. Because I have children of my own I feel that this is one of the first steps to be taught. In other words, technology is not something that is left for the student or child to explore freely without the appropriately user skills.

Tool 10

Tool 10 Exploring Mobile Technology and Apps-
ITouch, IPhone and IPad are the three pieces of techonolgy that this tools explores. These three pieces allow on the go learning.
Itouch , IPhone and IPad uses in education were the of the areas that I looked at. There are a number of ways ithey can be used, but the big one is it can be used as an internet device.
There is and Apple description of how to work these 3 pieces of technology. This page tells you just about everything you need to know about the capabilities of each.
There are many educational Apps in almost all academic areas. I even found one for Music Education. The other ones that I found interesting was Spanish Tutor 24/7, it gives you the word you are looking for and how to pronoun it. It will repeat it over and over.
I also found ABC Phonics and even Sign Language. The ABC Phonics would be good for elementary students. It reads words out loud and all has spelling practice. All of these Apps are free now, but it did say that the Sign Language is free for a limited time.
What a great tool to have that can work for many ages and grades. I have two boys so fortunately I have been able to work with all of them and they are amazing. We are very lucky to have them in the schools.

Tool 9

Tool 9 I reviewed the different ways that Jing and Skype can be used best in the classroom. I also reviewed the steps required to set up an account. I did not set one up because I have one on another computer. One of the ways I use it outside the classroom is with my college son. It is very nice to be able to see and talk to him when he has been gone for a few weeks.

Jing is free and you can add visuals to an online conversation. You can also make a movie using several screens. You will need to download Jing, but once that is done you simply snap a picture, record a video on the screen and share it instantly over the web, IM or email.

Skype is a way to make worldwide calls. Talk face to face one to one or as a conference call. It too is free. Again, you must down load the program. Set it up with a skype name and password.
Skype could be used in schools to provide professional developement, for teachers to collaborate with each other, as a homework helper, conduct read alouds and even provide support for special needs students. I can see all of us being able to use these to programs in a number of different ways with our students and co-workers.

Tool 8

Tool 8 is an excellent resource for video resources. I learned things like the difference between video hosting and video sharing. I also found out that user generated sites are mostly free. Some are screened before being published. Brainpop was a great educational site for covering Math, Technology, and most of the other subject areas. BrainPop Jr. included a site for ESL so I found that very helpful since that is one of the areas that I work in.
I also visited School Tube, That was really neat because students and teachers could share their creativity, hardwork and accomplishments witht the School Tube community. Two to of the ones I found interesting were Danger of Inactive and Bones. The first video gave us detailed information about the importance of being active and how it is necessary for good health and the other gave information about the bones of the past, specifically dinosaurs. Both covers topics that are of interest to kids of all ages. I will try to get these posted on my blog. Wish me luck.

tool 7

Tool 7 is a WOW tool! Digital Storytelling is a great computer based tool to use in the classroom. It is a mixture or texts tools, the stories usually last between 2-10 minutes. The topics can be based on personal, historical events or even the community. Because of the wide range of topics this can work with all students. The really neat things was that the students can use an online partner to communicate with ideas or questions.
The story is organized by using a clear outline approach. By reading about the fourth grade teacher and the excitement that her students showed toward writing shows how well this tool will work in the classroom.

Tool 6

Tool 6 Wikis is good tool for having students interact and discuss various topics or subjects. I liked the way that it will let the reader agree or disagree. Also it will let them make corrections if they find an error in the information such as a date. I hope to be able to use this in the near future. As I visited some of the sites about how to use Wikis, I found that they can be used a number of different ways. Some of the ones I found interesting were: Buy a car, Get a job and The Career. Each of these Wikis explained the process of doing each of these things.
I tried to get a Wiki to my blog but had technology difficulties in my training session. These things happen!
