Tool 11 Digital Citizenship
This tool covered the importance of teaching the different safety practices for using the internent and all of its possibilities. What I get from this is, don't expect the students to know what is appropriate and not appropriate when using the internet. They too are things that must be taught and brought to the attention of the user. They need to know that what they read and what they write should be appropriate for the area in which they are exploring. Because I have children of my own I feel that this is one of the first steps to be taught. In other words, technology is not something that is left for the student or child to explore freely without the appropriately user skills.
This is a subject area that I cover in my library lessons with all students during the first nine weeks of school. You're right, we can't assume the kids know what's right and wrong and it's important that they learn these lessons early on so they don't run into trouble as they get older.
